Kanchanur : Sukhiran Temple / Venus

Kanchanur, the Shiva Sthalam is associated with Sukran or Venus and is maintained by the Madurai Adinam. It is located in a quiet hamlet of Thiruvaaduturai. This Shrine is also referred to as Palaasavanam, Brahmapurai, and Agnisthalam. Brahma is said to have had a vision here of Shiva’s wedding with Parvati. Men visit to pray for the well-being of their wives. Sukra or Venus is the bestower of long life, wealth, happiness, children, property, and good education. He is ruled by Goddess Mahalakshmi.
The presiding deity Agneeswarar is the embodiment of Sukran. Sukrachariar was the Guru of asuras. He had got the blessings from Lord Siva after severe penances. In the Vamana Avataram of Lord Vishnu, Vamana sought three-foot steps of land from Mahabali, an asura king. Realizing Vamana to be no mere mortal, Sukrachariyar assumed the form of a bee and tried to block the flow of water from the kamandalam. Vamana picking up a pavithram blinds Sukracharya in one eye while trying to unclog the hole in the kamandalam.
Sukracharyar has the prowess to bring the dead to living by his knowledge of Amirtha Sanjeevini Mantra. Using this mantra, in the asura war against the devas, he revived the slain asuras. This helped the asura army swell. The devas prayed to Lord Siva for help, who swallowed up Sukracharya in a fit of rage. After residing in Lord Siva's stomach in a Siddha state, he emerged from Lord Siva’s stomach.

Sukra endows those who pray to him with wealth, pleasure, wife, prosperity, vehicles. He is the next most beneficial planet after Guru. If in a person’s horoscope, Sukra is well placed, then the person will enjoy pleasure, beautiful wife, wealth, house, vehicle, good food, fame, love, affection, marriage, siblings, governmental help, chance to govern the country/state and hold influential status.

If in a bad position, the ward will experience a family devoid of love and ties, bad life, enmity amongst family and friends, Kalathira dosham. By praying to Sukra these problems could be mitigated. Wife, arts, sculpture, love, vehicles are the beneficial aspects of Sukra.

The sthalam of Sukra Bhagavan is Kanjanur, which is located
18 kilometres north-east of Kumbakonam, en route to Mayavaram. His wives are Subakirthi, Sundari and Sringini. The presiding deities are Agneeswarar and his consort Iswari. He is the Lord of Rishaba and Thula Rasi and faces East direction. Adi Devatha is Indra’s physician. His colour is white; his vahana is the crocodile; the grain associated with him is mochai; the flower – white lotus; fabric – white cloth; gem – diamond; food – rice mixed with mochai powder.
Festivals: Six worship services are offered each day here. A festival commemorating Haradatta Sivacharyar is celebrated in the Tamil month of Thai each year. Mahasivaratri, Arudra Darisanam, Navaratri and Aadi Pooram are celebrated here.

Navagriha - Chandran - Thingalur

LOCATION OF THE TEMPLE:  Thingalur is on the way from Thiruvaiyaru to Kumbakonam in Thanjavur District of Tamilnadu State, India. It is around 15 km away from Thanjavur.

It is believed that Lord Shiva helped Lord Chandra to get over the curse of Daksha Prajapathi and asked Chandra to remain in Thingalur and help those people who suffer from the ill effects due to the placement of the moon in their horoscopes.
As Chandra was very much handsome and legible, Daksha Prajapathi gave all his 27 daughters to him. Instead of treating all of them alike, he neglected all the other 26 wives and spent most of the time with Rohini, Prajapathi advised Chandran to treat all his 27 wives equally. But Chandran ignored him. Daksha Prajapathi got cursed Chandran that he should suffer from 'Kshay'- deterioration of body within a short period of time. . Then, Chandran prayed to Lord Shiva in Thingalur to save him from the curse. Saving him Lord Shiva ordered that Chandran should remain in the temple in Thingalur and should give relief to those, suffering from all the aspects of Chandra's adverse placement in their horoscopes and offering prayers to him. So, such people who are affected by the adverse positions of Chandra in their horoscopes offer prayers to Lord Katharina, Goddess Sri Periyanayaki, and Chandra Baghavam by offering prayers.

Navagriha - suriyan - suryanarkoil

suryanarkoil

SURYANAR KOIL
Situated 21 km from Swamimalai is the Suryanar Koil built by King Kulothunga Chola I in the year 1100 AD. This temple is dedicated to Sun God Surya who is known as the giver of health, success, and prosperity. Every year in mid-January, the harvest festival is celebrated in thanksgiving and to honor Surya.

About the temple

The temple is a Navagrahasthalam. The presiding deity in this temple is Sri Suryanarayana the first among the Navagrahas, with his consorts Sri Usha Devi and Sri Pratyusha Devi. There are shrines dedicated to Kashi Vishvanathar, Visalakshi, and Kol Theertha Vinayakar. The sacred tank here is called Surya Theertham. The Navagraha idols here are present without weapons depicting their protective aspect. Guru Bhagavan here is depicted as offering worship to Surya Bhagavan.

The temple is built by the Chola kings and inscriptions from the period of Kulottunga Chola I (1075-1120)
show this temple as Kulottunga Chola Martanda Alayam. Inscriptions also portray that Krishna Devaraya has made endowments to this temple.

It is a must that one should first offer worship to Lord Shiva and Parvati at Thirumangalakudi before offering worship to Suryanarayana and the other Navagrahams here. People flock to the temple to nullify the malefic effects of planets in their birth chart.

The Sivasuryanarayana temple at Suryanar Koil is one of the Navagraha temples and is dedicated to Suryan.  This temple dedicated to Suryan has shrines for each of the other planets as well.  The legend says that Kalava Munivar had the rare ability to see the future.  One fine day, he realized that he was soon going to be affected by leprosy.  Since the Navagrahas controlled all the aspects of one's life, he prayed to the Navagrahas and sought to be saved from the disease.  Pleased by his devotion, the Navagrahas granted his wish.  On coming to know of this, Brahma was furious because nobody had the right to change a person's destiny.  He cursed all the nine planets that they will have to undergo what Kalava munivar was destined to, and hence all the nine planets were affected by leprosy.  The Navagrahas apologized and requested to know how they could overcome this curse.  Brahma advised them to go to the Thirumangalakudi and worship Prananatheswarar, at Vellerukkakadu, who alone could help them.  After worshiping Prananatheswarar and his consort Mangalambigai, they installed an idol of Vinayakar a little away from there and started their penance.  By God’s grace, they attained papa vimochanam  (salvation from their sin).
Kalava Munivar, for whom the Navagraha had undergone all the trouble, as a mark of gratitude, raised a temple at the same spot where the Navagrahas had performed their penance.
In this west-facing temple, the presiding deity is Suryanarayana in a chariot like vimaanam, representing the sun’s chariot.   Sivasuryanaraya is in a standing position with his two consorts, Usha & Prathyusha (Chaya).  There are also Shrines dedicated to Kasi Viswanathar, Visalakshi, and Guru Bhagavan in the sanctum.  Shrines for the other celestial bodies are located outside of the sanctum.  Vellerukku (Madar Plant) is the sthala vriksham.  Pillayar made out of the Vellerukku is sold in the shops here.  It is a very prized possession and protects from evil forces.
Thirumangalakudi
Once King Kulothunga’s Minister Alaivanar was building a temple from the tax collected without obtaining the King’s permission. The King had him beheaded when he came to know about this. As his death wish, the minister requested that he be cremated in Thirumangalakudi.  His wife prayed to the Mangalambikai at Thirumangalakudi and brought back her husband to life.  Women pray to the Goddess here for long life and the well-being of their spouse.
Method of Worship
Devotees are first required to have the darshan of Prananatheswarar and Mangalambigai at Thirumangalakudi before visiting Suryanar Koil.  This temple is just 1 km from Suryanar Koil and is situated in the same village.  The method of worship at this temple is very different from other temples.  We should first worship the Kol Vinai theertha Vinayaka.  He is called by this name because He helped the navagrahas get rid of their problems.  Thus, Kol Vinai Theertha Vinayakar is a VERY IMPORTANT deity.  We then worship the Nataraja in narthana mandapam.  Then at the main sanctum worship Visalakshmi & Kasi Vishvanthan (this is a small lingam on your left-hand side as you approach Suryan’s Shrine) before worshiping Suryan.  After worshiping Suryan, worship Guru Bhagavan who is facing Suryan.  Now, the circumambulation of the pradakshanam procedure is very different from other temples.  We now go in an anticlockwise direction and worship Saneeswaran, Budhan, Angarakan, Chandran, Kethu, Shukran, and Rahu before worshiping Chandikeswarar.  Then we proceed in a clockwise direction and return to worship Kol Vinai Theertha Vinayakar.  This may seem very confusing but there are signboards at the temple to guide the devotees.  After this prostrate or do a namaskaram near the dhwajasthambam.  Then it is recommended to do 9 pradakshanams of the outer praharam.
Suryanar Temple Festivals

The annual Ratha Saptami festival (Rathasapthami) during the Tamil month of Thai (January – February) is one of the main festivals celebrated here. The first Sundays in the months of Aavani (Leo) and Kartika (Scorpio) are also considered very auspicious. Vijaya Dashami and the annual Brahmotsavam festival (Bhrammotsavam) are also held with much devotion.

Vaitheeswaran Temple

Vaitheeswaran Temple is located in Tamil Nadu, India. It is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. One of the nine Navagraha Temples and the planet Mars (Angaraka) is also worshiped here. Believed to be the site of curing Angaraka of leprosy, this site is known for its Naadi astrologers.

It is believed that a bath in the holy waters of the Siddhamirtham tank within the temple complex will cure all diseases.  Recently the authorities have banned the use of soap and shampoo, but one can enjoy a normal bath in the tank. Also, it is a belief that dissolving "holy jaggery" (Tamil:vellam) in the water will cure one of the skin diseases.

Kandiyur Brahma Sira Kandeeswarar

Kandiyur Brahma Sira Kandeeswarar

This is one of the 108 Divyadesams and also one of the 275 Padal petra sthalams. Located about 10kms from Thanjavur on the road to Thiruvaiyaru, The deity Shiva here is known by the name, Brahma Sira Kandeeswarar or one who plucked off Brahma’s head. His consort is Mangala Nayaki. There is a separate temple for Brahma here. The main deity here is Hara Sabha Vimosana Perumal/ Kamalanathan- Goddess: Kamalavalli Naachiyar).

History of the Temple
Once upon a time, both Shiva and Brahma had 5 heads. One day Parvati (Shiva’s wife) coming out of her pooja mistook Brahma (because of his 5 heads) for her husband and began serving him by washing his legs. A furious Shiva announced Brahma and his 5 heads were the reason for this confusion. In a fit of anger, Shiva took the middle head of Brahma with his hand.  Unfortunately, the head of Brahmma stuck to Shiva’s hand. Shiva was afflicted with Brahmahatti Dosham due to His act of plucking off Brahma’s fifth head

Shiva went around the world on a pilgrimage to find salvation from the curse by begging for food, with Brahmma’s skull as the begging vessel. Every time someone filled the vessel with food, it vanished immediately, to Shiva’s horror.
.   He was partly absolved of the sin at Bitchandar Koil His hunger was satisfied at Bitchandar Koil but Brahma’s skull was still stuck to his palm.
Vishnu answered Shiva’s prayer for salvation and asked him to bathe at Kandiyur. It is believed that Shiva prayed to Goddess Kamalavalli and Vishnu at Kandiyur and attained salvation from Lord Kamalanathan here. The temple tank since then has come to be known as kapala theertham.

vadakkumnathan temple - Thrissur

vadakkumnathan temple - Thrissur

Thenkailasam and Vrishabhachalam are other names for Vadakkunnathan Temple. It is one of Kerala's largest and oldest Shiva temples, located in the city of Thrissur. This temple is a typical example of Kerala-style construction, with excellent murals depicting many Mahabharata stories artistically. Exquisite miniatures carved in wood may be found in the shrines and the Koothambalam.

The temple was created by Parasurama, according to legend. The main location of the Thrissur Pooram is the huge Thekkinkadu maidan, which encircles the Vadakumnathan temple. The four gopurams face north, south, east, and west, respectively.

Lord Parasurama, one of Lord Vishnu's eleven avatars, erected the Vadakkunnathan Temple, which is over 1,000 years old. The figure of Shiva, which is hidden beneath a ghee mount, was built throughout the years by daily abhishekam (ablution) using ghee. A devotee peering inside the sanctum now sees only a 16-foot-high ghee mount adorned with thirteen cascading gold crescents.

The miracle is, the ghee does not melt or does not have any foul odor.
The Ganapathi shrine is located in front of the temple kitchen, and one of the most prominent offerings to Mahaganapathy is Appam (sweetened rice cake fried in ghee). Propitiating Ganapathy is seen to be a way to prosperity and wealth in this area. A multi-shrine complex named nalambalam or chuttamabalam is located in the center of the Vadakkunnathan Temple, with three principal shrines dedicated to  Vadakkunnathan, Shankaranarayana, and Sri Rama.

On the northern side, there is a circular building with the god facing west. In the same shrine, Shiva-Parvati is shown looking east, directly behind Shiva's image.

Temple Festivals
Vadakkunnathan Temple is famous for the Thrissur Pooram festival celebrated annually in the month of April – May. One of the most colorful temple festivals of Kerala, Thrissur Pooram is a majestic event that combines the imposing elephant pomp with the furious playing of drums and cymbals. The fireworks at the occasion are a fabulous sight.

Temple Timings
The temple opens daily at 04:00 AM and closes at 10:30 AM. The temple reopens at 05:00 PM and closes at 8.20 PM. Non-Hindus entry is restricted in this temple.

The divine idol installed here represents the  world–enchanting form of Sree Krishna endowed with the four lustrous arms carrying the conch, the  discus, the mace and the lotus. Adorned with the divine `Thulasi’ garland and pearls necklaces, the idol represents the majestic form of Maha Vishnu as revealed to Vasudeva and  Devaki at the time of  'Krishnavathara'.

Thousands of devotees from all over the world visit this temple daily for darsan (worship). It is believed that the Lord revels here in the same majestic form as he would at 'Vaikunda' - his celestial abode. Thus Guruvayur is known as `Bhooloka Vaikunda'. the mace and the lotus. Adorned with the divine `Thulasi’ garland and pearls necklaces, the idol represents the majestic form of Maha Vishnu as revealed to Vasudeva and  Devaki at the time of  'Krishnavathara'.

SANCTITY OF THE IDOL The idol of Guruvayur temple is unique, since it is carved out of "Pathalanjana Sila", and is considered extremely sacred. This idol was once worshipped by Mahavishnu in Vaikunta. Vishnu handed it over to Brahma. King Suthapas and his wife who worshipped Bhrama for a child received this idol from Brahma. He advised them to start worshipping the idol. Once Lord Vishnu appeared before them and blessed them that he himself will be born as their child in their three re-births in three different forms and in three different situations. Thus they got the good fortune to worship the same deity in all three rebirths. They gave birth to Prasnigarbhan who gave to the world the practice of Brahmacharya Vratha (Celibacy) . In their next birth, Suthapas and his wife were born as Kashyapa and Adithi . Their son in that birth was Vamana. The third rebirth was as Vasudeva and Devaki. The Lord Krishna was born as their eighth son. In the long run , the Lord Krishna himself installed this idol in Dwaraka and worshipped it.

ANAYOTTAM OR ELEPHANT RACE Once Guruvayur was a Keezhedam (subordinate temple) of Thrikanamathilakam (Trikkunavay). The festival of Trikkunavay used to finish two days before the beginning of Guruvayur Utsavam . The elephants used to come from Trikkunavay for the Guruvayur utsavam. Once they refused to send their elephants to Guruvayur for not making payment in time. The elephants were chained but they broke the chain and ran to Guruvayur without the mahouts on that night. From that day onwards the elephants used to leave Trikkunavay on Punarvasu to reach Guruvayur in time for the festival. Trikkunavay was destroyed by the Dutch in 1755. To keep the reminiscence of this unusual event, the elephant race (aanayottam) is conducted every year and this marks the beginning of the Guruvayur Utsavam. The elephants run from Manjulal, (the banyan tree half a kilometer away from the eastern entrance to the temple) enter the temple, take 7 rounds and touch the flagstaff in the end. The first elephant to touch the flagstaff will be given special treatment inside the temple on the days of Utsavam and will get the privilege of carrying the Lord's thidambu for the procession.

In this temple only hindus are allowed.
Do not enter the temple wearing shirt, banyan, pyjama, lungi, chequered clothes, chapels etc. There are facilities to keep them outside the temple.

Garparakshambigai - Arulmigu Mullaivananathar Temple

Shri Garparakshambigai (also pronounced as Garbharakshambikha or Garbharakshambigai) temple, is situated at Thirukarukaavur, Papanasam Taluk in Tanjore District in TamilNadu. Lord Shiva in this Sthalam is called Mullaivananathar and the Ambika is called Garparakshambigai.

Garparakshambigai History

This is an ancient Siva temple about 20 km East of Thanjavur dedicated to Sri Mullaivananathar and Sri Garparakshambigai. It is a huge temple spread over a wide expanse with imposing Gopurams and a tank in front of it. It is believed that childless people who worship here with devotion and faith are blessed with pregnancy and pregnant women with safe deliveries. Unmarried women also pray here for their marriages.

Its origin speaks of the story of Sage Nidhruva and his wife Vedhika who conceived after many prayers. Once while the sage was away, the pregnant Vedika was deep asleep when Sage Urdhvapada came to her door asking for alms. Therefore, she did not hear him and failed to respond. He cursed her and the fetus slipped out of her womb. She prayed to the Goddess who appeared and protected it, keeping it in a pot till it developed into a male child Naidhruvan.

The Linga here is self-manifested and made of ant-hill mud. Therefore there is no water abhiseka worship is only offered with "Punuhu". This Punuhu Chattam is offered by devotees who want to be cured of diseases.

Lord Mullaivana Nathar [Lord of the Jasmine Garden]

Lord Mullaivana Nathar (Lord of the Jasmine Garden) and worshipping this God will cure all kinds of skin diseases. People who are afflicted with incurable diseases come to this temple.

Thirukarugavur is the abode of Goddess Garbharakshambika and Lord Mullaivana nathar Garbharakshambika means “The Mother Who Protects the Womb”. The name of the place itself brings out the significance of the temple. A remarkable feature of the temple which distinguishes this temple from the innumerable other shrines of our land is that the Goddess Sri Garbharakshambika not only protects the unborn child but also blesses people who long for a child, people who have pregnancy-related problems, and pregnant women who come to the temple praying for easy delivery.

The other presiding deity is Lord Mullaivana Nathar (Lord of the Jasmine Garden) and worshipping this God will cure all kinds of skin diseases. People who are afflicted with incurable diseases come to this temple.

Mannargudi rajagopalaswamy temple

About The Temple

Mannargudi rajagopalaswamy temple

The famous Vishnu temple at Mannargudi dedicated to Sri Rajagopalaswami was built by the Chola king Kulottunga (1070-1120 AD). The temple is situated over an area of 6 acres of land that commands an imposing view and provides accommodation for thousands of devotees. After the Chola kings, the Nayak kings of Tanjore took interest in the renovation of temples built earlier and as a result, the temple at Mannargudi was improved with many Gopurams and outer Prakarams.

Festivals Celebrated

Bhramotsavam in Pankuni (March -April), Float Festival in Aani (June-July), And Aadi Pooram During July-August Mannargudi is a place of religious antiquity and legendary importance. In ancient times, Mannargudi was known by many names namely, Senbagaranyam, Vasudevapuri, Dakshina Dwaraka, Vanduvarapati, and Swayambhu Sthalam, each name having a religious significance.

Temple Architecture

This is a massive temple with as many as seven Prakarams or circumambulatory paths surrounding the central sanctum. A 154 feet high RajaGopuram adorns the entrance to the outermost prakaram. There are several beautiful pillared halls in the temple - such as the Thousand-pillared hall, the Vallala Maharaja Mandapam, the Yaanai Vaahana Mandapam, Garudavaahana Mandapam, Vennaithaazhi Mandapam, and Punnai Vaahana Mandapam. The Shrine to Garuda on top of a 50 feet high monolithic pillar in front of the temple deserves mention. The saying 'Mannaargudi Madhil Azhagu' (the walls of the temple of Mannargudi are of great beauty) in Tamil, testifies to the grandeur of this temple.

Several teerthas (temple tanks) adorn this shrine. The Haridra Nadhi tank is located near the temple, and popular belief has it, that a river was transformed into a big tank, and that Rajagopala performed the famed Rasa Leela in the tank.

The Deities

The sanctum of this vast temple enshrines a 7 feet high image of Vasudeva with his consorts Sri Devi and Bhoodevi on either side. Sri Rajagopalaswami is the processional deity with a commanding appearance standing in front of the cow, with Rukmini and Satyabhama. This idol is considered to be the most handsome and attractive among the images of Vishnu.

There is another idol of Lord Krishna as a boy lying on the serpent Adisesha, with his right toe in the mouth, known as "Santana Rajagopalan". This image is made of bronze and the workmanship is super-excellent. The worship of Santana Rajagopalan has got a special significance. Popular belief has it that cradling the image of Santanagopalakrishna in one's lap would bless a barren couple with progeny.

There is a shrine of Goddess Senbagavalli Tayar and on her sides are the shrines of Rajanayaki on the right and Dwaranayaki on the left. She has four arms. This shrine has separate Prakarams.

There are small shrines in the temple dedicated to Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, Garudalwar, etc. The Garuda Stambha placed in front of the Lord's shrine is 54 feet high and is made of a -single stone.

Glory of Moorthy

How to recount the beauty of the Lord at the Sanctum sanctorum slightly leaning towards the cow, with a single garment, an earring and a dangling kundala, holding in he right hand the golden rod with a whip having three corrugated dents, with the left hand fixed and resting on the shoulder of Sri Satya Bhama, standing enchantingly in a Tribhanga posture and most handsome to behold,  Sri Vidya Rajagopala is captivatingly alluring, and the Mulavar Para Vasudevaconsorted by Sri Devi and Bhudevi is majestic to look at. In the standing posture, Mulavar, holding conch, discus, and mace, decorated with a complete set of silver Kavacha all over, dispels all our taints as also extends grace and benediction. Not only does He confer grace and merit to those who make a beeline to the shrine but anxious to bestow benefits to those who keep aside or could not otherwise visit the temple, He goes about the ceremonial procession along the streets. The beauty and bounty of Sri Vidya Rajagopala are unparalleled.

Oh, the charm of the left hand fixed and folded along the shoulder of Sri Satyabhama. Oh, the spell of the right hand holding the goldenrod with a whip having three distinct curling dents! Oh, the feast to the eyes (of the view of the Lord) is being attended by Rukmini on the right and Satyabhama on the left representing the pleasures and fortunes of this, as also the next birth!

While recollected in tranquil moments Sri Sengamala Thayar and Hemabja Nayaki Thayar with bouquets in their hands become the sweet mango, the revivifying force of energy of humanity, for they confer bliss and grace with their ambrosial form of compassionate eyes and fulfill the fruition of the ever-cherished aspirations of mankind!

The Vahanams In The Temple

There are many Vahanams in the temple of which Panchamukha Hanuman (Hanuman with five faces) is worth mentioning. Garuda Vahanam and Horse Vahanam are plated with gold and are said to have been donated by a European officer who was cured of his colic on offering worship to the Lord.

Worship Services And Festivals

Seven worship services are offered during the course of a day, and this temple attracts pilgrims throughout the year. The annual festival (Bhramotsavam) is celebrated in the month of Pankuni (March 15-April 15) for a period of 18 days when the deities are taken out in procession on decorated mounts. The float festival occurs in the month of Aani (June 15 - July 15). Aadi Pooram celebrated between July 15 and August 15 is another of the important festivals here.
